If you are as desperate as I was when I got DH – aka dermatitis herpetiformis aka the gluten rash – all over my body, and you are willing to try anything to get rid of it, you’ve come to the right place.
My very first gluten rash was painfully itchy. I got it after eating fake meat chicken nuggets in which the main ingredient was gluten. I couldn’t function, and I couldn’t think straight. I seriously thought about jumping off a cliff – that’s how bad the rash was. Sounds familiar? Due to the Covid19 pandemic, my dermatologist had a two weeks wait. Two weeks?! – I thought – if this continues for two weeks I’ll sure go insane by then. So I decided I had to take the matters into my own hands and try to find some relief. I started researching the subject online, but apart from suggested steroids, there was not much information there. I then tried different over the counter anti-itch ointments as well as natural solutions like jojoba oil, aloe vera gel, cold compresses, and baking soda baths. I would get some relief for a short period, but half hour later, the painful itch was back full strength. The one day I had an epiphany – I realized that my issue originated from ingesting a huge amount of gluten and that no ointment was going to help me unless I healed my stomach first. Lo and behold, it helped! I got rid of my rash by using natural remedies. Within a week the rash started to go away. I did eventually see my dermatologist, and I was prescribed steroids, but guess what? I didn’t need them after all. I picked up the steroids just in case the rash reversed and started getting worse, but that never happened.
I healed my gluten rash naturally! Wanna know how? Proper diet and one natural ointment. The rules of my diet were simple: no grains because some grain proteins are too similar to gluten, replace the gluten protein in my system with another healthy protein, no dairy, eat dark leafy greens & fruits for vitamins and antioxidants, eat probiotics, and load up on vitamins that are usually related to celiac disease. I also added one natural ointment to help my skin heal faster. Why did all this work? I truly believe that getting rid of the gluten protein in my system by eating a lot of other protein was the most important part. Here is what I did daily:
- Start the day with a pea protein shake. My shake consisted of: a scoop of organic pea protein powder (15g of protein), a one organic banana, some water, 1/2 cup organic almonds (you can use almond milk instead), 1 TSBP organic peanut butter – make sure it is labeled gluten-free organic pea protein. Do not use whey based protein powder as a lot of people with gluten issues also can’t tolerate dairy and whey is a milk derivative! If you feel hungry after the shake and can’t make it to lunch, use put 2 scoops of protein powder in your morning shake – this should be about 30g of protein.
- Have leafy greens for lunch. My lunch consisted of: 2 leaves organic kale, 2 cups organic broccoli (I used frozen broccoli), 3 cloves organic garlic – all steamed together in a pot until soft. You can adjust the amounts and eat as much as you need in order to feel full. Notice I emphasize that everything is ORGANIC, this is because you want to heal your stomach and you don’t want to eat any pesticides that can compromise your health even more.
- Take vitamins either with lunch. I took the following vitamins: selenium, vitamin E, vitamin D, vitamin B12, and a multivitamin (make sure all are labeled gluten-free).
- Enjoy a second pea protein shake. My second shake for the day consisted of: a scoop of organic pea protein powder, a one organic banana, some water, 1/2 cup organic almonds (you can use almond milk instead), 1 TSBP organic peanut butter – make sure it is labeled gluten-free organic pea protein.
- Have dinner full of fresh fruits. My dinner was an extra fruity acai bowl: 1 unsweetened organic acai packet, 1 cup frozen organic blueberries, 1/2 frozen organic strawberries, 5 frozen organic cranberries, 1 TBSP organic flax seeds, 1 TBSP organic chia seeds, 1 TSBP organic goji berries, 2 leaves organic kale, some organic almond milk and water for a nice smoothie consistency – throw all the above in a blender and blend until thick consistency. I put the smoothies in a bowl and topped it off with some organic pumpkin seeds, organic walnuts, organic raw honey and bee pollen.
- Follow up your dinner with good probiotics. I used liquid organic coconut probiotics. You can use capsules instead, but make sure that they are 50 billion CFU or more.
- Massage healing ointment onto your rash for the night. I used organic CBD salve blend. Massage this ointment onto your body twice a day – upon waking up and when going to sleep. This helps your skin heal faster – especially the scratched wounds. I have no scars left from the gluten rash I had. The ointment helped my skin heal faster.
- Drink plenty of water or organic fruit and veggie juices throughout the day. I drank water and organic carrot juice.

After two weeks, my rash was getting so much better that I started adding some other foods such as gluten-free grains and starches like mashed potatoes and such. I suggest giving this a try for two weeks, and once you start feeling better, try adding new foods one at a time. If the rash starts being itchy again, eliminate the food you just added. Here is a list of items you should avoid when trying to heal your gut: caffeine, dairy, refined sugars including fruit juices from contrate, processed foods including gluten-free junk foods, high fat foods like red meat, and alcohol.
